article imageLiberal leader Justin Trudeau favours legalization of marijuana

By Richard Mccallum     Jul 26, 2013 in Politics
Kelowna - As The Liberal leader finishes up a whirlwind five day tour of British Columbia he tells a cheering crowd that his position on cannabis has evolved from decriminalization to legalization and taxation of the herb.
Trudeau feels that while decriminalization may be an important first step to remove the criminal penalties currently associated with the herb, that the only true way to keep it out of the hands of minors is to legalize it, tax it and make it a mandatory requirement to show identification to prove that the purchaser is an adult.
"In many cases it is more difficult for young people to get their hands on cigarettes than it is to get their hands on weed." Trudeau said in the above vid shot 23/07/13.
"Once we regulate it and require ID to be shown before anyone can buy it for proof of age, we are actually putting a better control on it.
Nobody can argue that the current approach on drugs is working. We have to look at something else."
"Marijuana is not a health food supplement. It's not great for you. But its certainly- as many studies have shown- not worse for you than cigarettes and alcohol."
His position on decriminalisation and legalization of cannabis is in direct opposition of the current federal government policy on the herb who Trudeau thinks;" base their approach on ideology and fear"
"I prefer to base my approach on evidence and best practices and I think that's what Canadians will respond to."said the youthful leader.
The Conservative Party was quick to respond to the news saying on their website that
"The fact that one of Justin Trudeau's first policy priorities is legalizing marijuana demonstrates once again that he does not have the judgement to be Prime Minister"
A recent article on the issue of cannabis legalization published by Maclean's magazine 10/06/13 by Ken MacQueen reported that in a 2012 poll conducted by Angus Reid 57% of Canadians favor the legalization of cannabis.
The next Canadian federal election is scheduled for October 2015.
