article imageInterview with country trio Michaelis: 'Shoot Straight' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jul 26, 2013 in Entertainment
On July 25, I chatted via telephone with the country trio of sisters Michaelis. The vocal group is made up of Meagan, Mallory and Madeline Michaelis. The ladies opened up about their debut radio single “Shoot Straight.”
According to Meagan, she shared, “We are excited about our new single ‘Shoot Straight.’ We wrote it about a guy that I was dating, who didn’t pay too much attention to me. I didn’t have the guts to tell him ‘if you don’t love me then leave,’ but that’s what I wished I would have said to him.”
Mallory noted that they were inspired musically by their family, as well as a wide spectrum of different artists such as Shania Twain, Garth Brooks, Dixie Chicks, The Eagles and Sheryl Crow. “Our parents didn’t even allow us to listen to pop radio growing up. Country music is who we are. As kids we were wearing our cowgirl boots under our prom dresses,” Mallory said with a laugh.
For their forthcoming studio album, Michaelis collaborated with veteran Nashville producer Dave Brainard who has worked with country artist Jerrod Niemann. “Dave is our best friend. When we first met him, we were really nervous and we tried to impress him, but he wanted to know us on a creative level and he helped us come up with good material. Dave spent a lot of time with us in the studio and he made our music sound exactly like how our personalities are. He is such a cool and big-hearted person and he is a brilliant producer,” Meagan said.
Madeline shared that the girls are doing a Texas tour at the moment. “We are going to finish up the rest of this tour and we will return to Nashville to do some more interviews and photo-shoots and get ready for the record. We’ll see how it goes once the album is out. We are excited for our new video for ‘Shoot Straight’ to be out on Country Music Television (CMT) in a few weeks.”
The trio of sisters revealed that they work on their video for “Shoot Straight” with Sherman Halsey, whom they dub as the “Ralph Lauren of music videos.” “We are so blessed to work with him too. It was a lot of fun,” the girls echoed.
When asked about their dream male collaboration partners, Mallory listed Tim McGraw, whereas Madeline and Meagan selected Keith Urban and Garth Brooks respectively.
