On July 24, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Katrina Carlson opened up about her newest album “Sunshine State of Mind,” which reflects the philosophy that she has come to live her life by.
Whether confronted with terrible tragedy, Katrina finds strengths in focusing on the positive aspects of her life and family and it helps her through. “I wrote over the course of a couple years and I really found that I had a message that I wanted to convey. I focused on the positive life lessons that I wanted to communicate,” she said.
She plays such instruments as guitar, piano, accordion, harmonica, percussion, ukulele, among many others. “When you grow up in music you can pick up different things, even though I am not a full-fledged drummer yet,” she said.
An Arizona native, Karina has had hit singles in the Adult Contemporary charts with “No One Is to Blame,” a cover of the Howard Jones classic, where he even makes a vocal cameo on the tune, as well as a cover of Car’s “Drive.” “I love the lyrics to ‘No One is To Blame,’ which came out in the 1980s since it is about longing,” she said.
Her song “I Know You By Heart” is a collaboration with Benny Mardones. “My manager at the time was from Syracuse and he hooked me up with Benny, since he was a big fan of Benny’s ‘Into the Night’ song,” she said.
Although music is her greatest passion in life, she also studied International Relations, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy at the prestigious Brown University. “Music is something that is my passion, my muse, my therapy and my inspiration. I am a fan and I am an artist and it’s a part of life for me,” she said.
Katrina noted that she started writing her next studio album and it will be available soon; moreover, her daughter is expected to come out with her new CD, which will be released on the same independent label as Katrina’s. “I am also writing a book about choosing to be happy and how my journey has been on that,” she said. “What I had to learn through experience is what I would like to share with others.”
She and her husband enjoy traveling around the world and she writes about her travels in her “Wander Through this World” post on her Facebook page, which also features a photo montage. “My husband made this amazing slideshow for my CD release party and it starts when we were first married in our early 20s and it features our three children coming into our lives through our travels. You can see us in such places as Barcelona, Argentina, the Great Wall of China, Belize and Vietnam,” she said.
