On July 23, country singer Katie Armiger chatted via telephone with me about her new single “Playin’ with Fire,” which is out on country radio.
The tune is about the heat and volatility of a less predictable romance. “I wrote that song with a Nashville husband and wife duo, Ricky and Micol Davis, and we were feeling really sassy that day. I had the line ‘I know you’re like playing with fire but I like the burn’ in my head, so we went with it and we wrote it around that line,” she said.
Her music video for “Playin’ with Fire,” directed by Stephen Shepherd, debuted at No. 2 on the Great American Country (GAC) Top 20 fan-voted countdown. “That felt incredible. We spent a lot of time and effort in this video, so it felt rewarding,” she said. “I am really good friends with Stephen and it is always a total blast to work with him.”
From her current album, “Fall Into Me,” Katie co-wrote each of the 14 songs on there. It was well received, thus debuting at No. 7 on the Billboard and the iTunes Country Album charts on the day of its release. “I was inspired by my life experiences to write this album, as well as my friends’ life experiences,” she said.
Katie noted that the theme to her album involved “falling in and out of love.”
On this project, she collaborated with such songwriters as Blair Daly, Joe West, Bruce Wallace and Skill Mills. “I was very blessed and lucky to surround myself with such talented writers and artists,” she said.
Katie was chosen as the newest brand ambassador for “Pastry,” the lifestyle brand focused on producing apparel, accessories and footwear for junior girls worldwide. “I signed on with Pastry over the last year and they had really fun and flirty shoes. I love that country music is continuously getting a younger and younger audience, and these shoes really capture that youth and vitality,” she said.
Throughout her career in country, five of her singles have charted on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts and she has opened for such artists as Brad Paisley, Little Big Town, Dierks Bentley, Eli Young Band, Darius Rucker, Josh Turner, Rodney Atkins, among many others. “These are all incredible artists and I am very thankful to have been a part of their tours,” she said.
While she is out on the road, she has her dog “Opry” as a travel companion. “I travel with her and I bring Opry with me wherever I can,” she said.
The Texas native signed an exclusive worldwide administration deal with leading New York-based right management firm, Downtown Music Publishing. “It’s been really great working with them since they do a lot of film and TV placements for songs and that has been great for me, especially since the material that I write is current and they help me to get the music out there, which I couldn’t do on my own,” she said.
Each music video that Katie ever filmed and released in the past three years has earned a spot on GAC’s “Top 20 Countdown,” and she was also voted in the No. 1 spot in Country Weekly’s “Hottest Bachelorette” issue for two consecutive years. “I have some really great fans and they are constantly showing their support,” she said.
Katie listed Atlantic Nashville recording country artist Brett Eldredge as her dream duet choice. “I really like Brett Eldredge since he is a great artist and I am really impressed with his voice. We have some mutual artists and I have met him before and he is just really good,” she said.
