article imageOp-Ed: Netflix chat session a dud

By Amanda Byas     Jul 23, 2013 in Entertainment
Netflix (NFLX) decided to dive into experimental waters of streaming quarterly earnings call live online, with questions asked by one analyst and one financial journalist.
The half hour chat session was streamed Monday on YouTube (GOOG). It was notable for the college feel quality of the production, completed with laptop webcams, horrid lighting, along with two men in goatees.
Reed Hastings, Netflix Chief Executive stated:
“This is our attempt to bring that value to the broad online public.”
The entire chat was not exactly Emmy material though. It was basically a couple of reporters with executives who did not want to give up the juicy details of the story. This is the exact reason why real-world newsrooms do not stream such activities on the internet because it is much too formal to be steamed on YouTube.
Julia Boorstin, CNBC reporter, set the tone for the chat session. Boorstin asked Hastings to respond to the criticism that format undercuts analysts looking to communicate with company executives.
Hastings response was:
“Well, I think we should process that after the interview and see if it’s productive and useful for investors, and see what they think.”
Greenfield jumped to the question everyone wanted to know: “why Netflix for U.S. subscriber growth in the second quarter, a miss that led to a 7 percent drop in after-market trading Monday evening.”
Still, it is worth pondering what the real point adding video to an interview that would do perfectly over the phone. However, if Hastings plans to continue streams every quarter, He should plan to rent a newsroom studio. At least, it will look better than the previous one did.
