Madrid - According to the hotel reservation website, Expedia, in the first quarter of 2013, hotel reservations on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain were up by 25 percent compared to last year. This is good news for tourism on the southern Andalucían coast.
According to La Opinión de Málaga, the President of the Tourist Board of Málaga, Elijah Bendodo, told the media after analyzing the data that this is considered "very positive" news indeed and means "good prospects" ahead during summer 2013. "They already see more movement than last year," he added.
Besides the generally better outlook in the first quarter of the year, Digital Journal reported back in June that Turkey's ongoing protests could be good for Spain's 2013 tourism. While the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey was trying to reassure tourists that Turkey is a "safe" country to visit, a large number of tourists reportedly changed their summer destination. All in all, things are definitely looking up for the crisis-torn country.

From Expedia's data, it is noteworthy that the growth of demand in hotel nights sold is mainly from package holidays in destinations like Málaga (+48 percent, Fuengirola (+42 percent), Nerja (+38 percent) and Torremolinos (+38 percent).
The most striking growth on the Costa del Sol has been in Nerja hotels, reaching almost 100 percent so far this year in the first quarter of 2013.

The data also shows that most of the tourists visiting the Costa del Sol selected 3 and 4 star hotels and that they spend an average of almost 4 days (3.9 to be exact) on the coast. The average stay of travelers booking a vacation package is 50 percent longer than those booking hotels only.

Expedia director in Spain, Carrie Davidson, says that with the increase in bookings, this makes the Costa del Sol the third most popular destination in Spain, behind the Balearic and Canary Islands, which is the main market for "tourism from the Nordic countries and the United Kingdom."
Bendodo said that these figures are "the results of the efforts made in tourism and corporate commitment, and help to keep and retain tourists traveling to our destination."

The Tourist Board has sealed a partnership with Expedia, the largest travel portal 'on line'. The chairman of the promotion agency stressed the importance of an agreement allowing wider dissemination of the offer of the Costa del Sol, which is now the third most popular destination after Balearic and Canary Islands.
"We have partnerships with leading global players. For us it is essential. That we are in the 'Top Ten' of destinations is essential, especially for the impact of these on travel promotion. The brand will be in a preferential area and can be more easily selected.

"Also noted is the fact that Expedia data shows that despite strong competition from other Mediterranean destinations and the economic situation of some of the markets, the Costa del Sol continues to attract more and more foreign tourists."
In this sense, Carrie Davidson, director of Expedia in Spain, said the nights booked for hotels in the Costa throughout this portal network increased by 19 percent. She further explained that the favorite destinations in this area include Marbella, Málaga and Torremolinos. However, she further explained that the fastest growing municipalities in this quarter are Fuengirola and Benalmadena.
