article imageAmerica is the George Zimmerman of the world: Cornel West

By Sami Zaatari     Jul 22, 2013 in World
Well known intellectual, Cornel West, likened the United States of America to George Zimmerman, during an interview with CNN.
Cornel West made the remarks when responding to a question asked by CNN, about President Obama calling for a rethink of Florida's controversial "stand your ground" law:
He said we must never rationalize killing innocent people in the name of self-defense, and then I thought about our drone policy, which makes us the George Zimmerman of the world in terms of killing innocent folk in the name of self-defense
The Obama administrations policy of drone strikes has brought it under heavy criticism from several quarters, who argue that drone strikes have killed and injured several innocent civilians.
President Obama gave a speech on the use of drone strikes back in May, arguing that drone strikes were necessary, and minimised casualties in comparison to other military measures that could be carried out. Obama promised to give more government oversight on the handling of future drone strikes, though as of yet no framework has been put in place to oversee those plans.
