Contrary to many unofficial reports, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to her first child, a boy, late in the afternoon on July 22nd, 2013.
Many believed that Catherine slipped up months ago by thanking a supporter at an event she was attending when she said that she thought her ", baby" would love the gift. It was believed at the time Her Royal Highness started to say "daughter" igniting a firestorm of speculation by the media.
However, this evening shortly after 8:30 BST, approximately four hours after the birth, Buckingham Palace issued the following announcement:
Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm.
The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz.
The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.
The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.
Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight
The child was born at St. Mary's Hospital in London, the same hospital his father, William, the Duke of Cambridge, was born to Princess Diana and her then husband, Prince Charles.
Much to everyone's relief, it is being reported that both mother and child are doing well. No names have been announced as yet. Catherine and WIlliams' new baby boy is now third in line to the throne of England, behind his grandfather, Charles, and his father, WIlliam.
A statement has also been issued by Charles, the Prince of Wales and his wife, the former Camilla Parker-Bowles:
Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.
Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.
