article imageNational Ice Cream Day in America's Best City for Ice Cream Special

By Kay Mathews     Jul 22, 2013 in Food
Savannah - Readers of Travel + Leisure magazine ranked Savannah as the best city for ice cream and Leopold's Ice Cream is the main reason why the city got the top spot. Many celebrated National Ice Cream Day by stopping-in at Leopold's for a tasty scoop, or two.
On July 9, 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a Proclamation making July National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month was declared National Ice Cream Day. Those sweet holidays continue to be observed and on Sunday, July 21, Americans from sea to shining sea happily celebrated by treating themselves to the "perfect dessert and snack food."
A UPI headline reads "National Ice Cream Day: How did you celebrate?" My answer is that I, along with many others, went to Leopold's Ice Cream in Savannah, Georgia.

Readers of Travel + Leisure magazine, who took the "America's Best Cities for Ice Cream" survey, ranked Savannah at No. 1. The magazine noted that Savannah has "a flair for old-school ice cream" and featured Leopold's Ice Cream saying that it "is a classic parlor that dates back to 1919 and makes single-batch flavors such as old-style tutti-frutti and more newfangled options such as Guinness and Japanese cherry blossom."
I arrived at Leopold's around 8:00p.m. and found, as is often the case, that there was a line of folks waiting to get a tasty treat at this classic ice cream parlor. And, as is always the case, the line outside the doors of 212 E. Broughton Street moved quickly. One way the process was sped up is that an employee was handing-out menus so that folks would know what they wanted to order, or get a sample of, once at the counter.

I asked the nice young man who was distributing menus to tell me what had been the best-selling flavor on National Ice Cream Day? He said it was a tie between Chocolate Chewies & Cream and Caramel Swirl.
Because I wanted to do a quick interview about Savannah being ranked #1 ice cream city, I also asked if either of the owners, Stratton and Mary Leopold, was in. I was told they had been in earlier in the day, but were not here now. Earlier in the week, however, Stratton told WTOC, “We've been so blessed with publicity nationally and internationally it boggles our minds sometimes. But we're just so pleased, so honored. Visit Savannah does such a fantastic job promoting the city. We're just proud to be part of the city.”
Once at the counter, I ordered my usual - a scoop of Honey Almond & Cream. But, since it was a holiday, I decided to splurge and try a flavor I hadn't tried here before - Chocolate Chocolate Chip.

Another reason the line moves so swiftly is due to the wonderful folks working the counter and register. The young man who prepared my two scoops of lusciousness was only too happy to pose with my order and smile for the camera.

As I left the counter on my way to a table, I turned and saw the beautiful concoction seen below. Its "owner" was kind enough to let me take a photo of it, and he later stopped me outside on the sidewalk and told me that it tasted even better than it looked!

The Travel + Leisure write-up of No. 1 Savannah also mentioned the Sugar Shack in nearby Tybee Island, saying that "another hot spot is the famous Sugar Shack on Tybee Island, a longtime family-owned operation with floats, frosties, and classic flavors such as piña colada and banana pudding." I think I just may have to visit the Sugar Shack. It is, after all, National Ice Cream Month.
