If you want to take off a few pounds you may want to move to Dubai in the UAE, and take off more than a few. The governing powers that be in the city have a new program offering participants a gram of gold for each pound they lose.
Making for more incentive, and making it easier, the 30-day program is being offered during the Fast of Ramadan, a 30-day period (some years 29) that's important in the Muslim calendar and in which food is only offered before sunrise and after sunset.
"Ramadan is the most appropriate season to launch such initiatives," Dubai city manager Hussain Nasser Lootah said. "As it reminds us about many health benefits of reducing weight and encourages us to take strong steps to change our bad lifestyles."
There is great concern in the city for the weight of many citizens as, much like other cities and countries in the world, there is a rise in obesity in Dubai. The 'Your Weight in Gold' challenge hopes to enlist many obese persons and even in a country with a high average annual income the prospect of gold seems strong incentive.
The top three finishers - or the top three losers - get additional gold worth $5,400. So let's say you lose around 30 pounds in 30 days, a good haul but for the obese, who lose quicker, doable. With gold at nearly 1300 U.S. dollars, and an ounce amounting to 31.1 grams, you're looking at almost $1300. Now if that 30 pound loss got you into the top three you stand to make $6,700 dollars.
Enough to start back overeating again.
