article imageReview: Mahalo! Makana's new album 'Ripe' will soon be ready for picking

By Anne Sewell     Jul 20, 2013 in Entertainment
With the help of Kickstarter members and fans, Makana, the well-known singer, song-writer and Hawaiian slack key guitar player has now produced his new album "Ripe." It will be ready for purchase in September or October this year, and it is so good.
Some of us were lucky to have contributed to Makana's Kickstarter fund to give him the opportunity to work with a Multi-Platinum producer, Ron Nevison (The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones), along with Grammy-award winning keyboardist, composer, arranger Jeff Bova (Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton) as well as renowned producer Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt) in producing his latest album "Ripe".

Rather than sign a major label deal with a big corporation to produce the album, he wished to maintain the pure integrity of his artistic vision, so he launched the campaign on Kickstarter to raise the necessary funds.
And so, those of us who did kick in a few bucks have just received our download codes and without doubt we are all listening to this great new album, probably in repeat mode!
The album features a diverse collection of Makana's music, including a very inspiring rendition of "We Are The Many", a slack key guitar duet with Maui's Jeff Peterson with a Spanish feel, dubbed "Slackmenco", a rendition of Gabby's most famous Hawaiian song, "Hi'ilawe", and "a collection of some of the most fun, deeply moving and relatable songs I've ever written," says Makana.
The new re-engineered version of "We Are the Many" is great and moving, making us recall his brave stance, wearing an "Occupy with Aloha" t-shirt, singing the song in various versions for 45 minutes to President Barack Obama and other world leaders at the Apec Summit held in Hawaii in November 2011.
A new version of his song "Home" is also included, singing in harmony with Rocky Brown.

His beautiful singing voice and impressive guitar playing can be heard throughout the new album.
The music integrates the beauty of slack key guitar playing into Makana's own contemporary style.
The album consists of powerful and inspiring work relevant to each of us and our time. It showcases the very best of Makana's guitar playing, writing, singing and song craft.
This beautiful album is "brought to you Honua Kai Resort & Spa and the Aloha shared by Makana's fans."
While I cannot include the actual finished and produced tracks from the new album, you can enjoy the original version of "We Are the Many" above.
And just for fun, included below is a rough version of the song "Nectarine" which is also featured on the new album, sung in someone's private home in Amsterdam in the Netherlands:
