Johannesburg - Oscar buzz is already starting around “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” The official trailer for the film was released this week in celebration of Mandela’s birthday – he turned 95 on Thursday.
The film – based on Nelson Mandela’s 1994 autobiography – stars 40-year-old Londoner Idris Elba (“Pacific Rim”) and Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela. It covers Mandela’s life spanning from his days leading the civil rights movement with the African National Congress. Global Post reports that Elba “is rousing" as he gives Mandela’s famous speech to the judge who sentenced him to life in prison.
Mandela’s birthday this week marked 15 years of marriage to his wife, Graca Machel. It also marked 41 days in a Pretoria hospital, CBS News reports.
The Spec reports that there were hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital on Thursday rallying support for the world leader. In Johannesburg children at a Brixton primary school chanted, “Happy birthday, Tata Madiba,” using the clan name for Mandela.
Mandela’s daughter, Zindzi, told CBS News that South Africa's first black president was making “remarkable progress,” and that they were expecting to have him "back home soon.”
The film, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” will be in theaters November 29.
