San Francisco - One of three teenage passengers from Asiana Airlines Flight 214 killed last Saturday, initially survived the crash landing but was run over by a fire truck racing to extinguish the burning wreckage
The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office announced the cause and manner of the girl’s death at a news conference Friday morning, the San Francisco Chronicle said.
An autopsy determined that 16-year-old Ye Mengyuan died from "multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle," San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said.
Police and fire officials confirmed last week that Mengyuan was hit by a fire truck. "One of the deceased did have injuries consistent with those of having been run over by a vehicle," Fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said last Saturday, according to Reuters.
What we know now is that she survived the horrific landing and was alive when struck on the runway at San Francisco's International Airport
Yuan and her middle school classmate, 16-year-old Wang Linjia, were sitting in the back half of the plane on July 6 when flight 214 slammed into the runway while trying to land at the airport and caught fire, forcing many to escape by sliding down the emergency inflatable slides as flames tore through the plane. The other victim killed, 15-year-old Liu Yipeng, died at a hospital July 12. Dozens of others were injured. Officials said 182 people were taken to area hospitals.
As for the driver of the fire truck that struck the student, NBC reports, San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said she does not see disciplinary action against him, calling it a "a tragic accident."
The fire chief said her department has reached out to Mengyuan's family through the Chinese consulate and offered to meet with them.
"There's not a lot of words to describe how sorry we feel, how badly we feel about it," Hayes-White said.
