Zach Johnson continued his terrific play from last week, where he lost in a five hole playoff at the John Deere Classic and is the leader after the first round of the 2013 Open Championship with a stellar round of 66 at Muirfield.
Only 20 of the 156 players in this years field broke par on Thursday, but the leader board is crowded with some of the biggest names in golf.
Tiger Woods is sitting in ninth position after firing a 69. The worlds number one player never used his driver in the opening round, instead he played smart golf off the tee and used mainly irons to get himself into good position and it seemed to have worked.
Phil Mickelson also shot a 69 in the opening round with four birdies and just two bogeys on his scorecard.
Johnson however was the story of the day as the former Masters winner had four birdies, one eagle, and just one bogey to finish with the lead.
The British Open is the oldest and most popular Major Championship globally and with so many great players already in the mix for the title, golf fans all around the world have three more days of outstanding play and excitement before the winner of the 2013 Open Championship is crowned.
