article imageTrailer: Julian Assange goes to Hollywood — The Fifth Estate

By Eko Armunanto     Jul 18, 2013 in World
WikiLeaks and Julian Assange have always seemed destined to become Hollywood fodder. The Fifth Estate is set for first release on October 11. Assange has previously attacked the movie, calling its screenplay a mass propaganda attack on WikiLeaks.
Benedict Cumberbatch plays Assange in the film, which is partially based on Guardian writers David Leigh and Luke Harding's book WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy . During a video-linked talk to students at Oxford University, Julian Assange described the forthcoming Hollywood film about him as a massive propaganda attack. Addressing the Oxford Union from his refuge at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, the activist also described the Dreamworks film as an inflammatory attack on Iran.
Assange told the Oxford Union that the film began with scenes inside a military complex in Iran, where nuclear symbols could clearly be seen. The suggestion, he said, was that the country was building a nuclear weapon and the film was clearly an attempt to go about "fanning the flames" of war. "How does this have anything to do with us? It is a lie upon lie," he said. "The movie is a massive propaganda attack on WikiLeaks and the character of my staff."

The trailer showed none of that Iranian material, however, and the film’s director Bill Condon said the scenes in question have been removed from the script; regarding this removal WikiLeaks said its comments were based on the script used during filming.
Assange is currently living in the Ecuadorian embassy, which offered him asylum last August, in an effort to avoid being extradited to Sweden, where he faces allegations of rape and sexual assault. He says he fears being extradited onwards to the US over his WikiLeaks activism.
