By Markos Papadatos     Jul 16, 2013 in Entertainment
On July 16, I chatted via phone with Grammy-winning country singer Steve Wariner, who opened up about his upcoming performance at the Grand Ole Opry, as well as his forthcoming shows at Joe’s Pub in New York, and his August tour dates in Texas.
He will play tomorrow at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. “I love the Wednesday nights at the Opry since you get to perform for 15 minutes and you get to sing three or four songs. This show came up at the last moment,” he acknowledged. “I don’t know what I am going to sing yet, but I do know that it’s going to be fun.”
On July 23 and 24, Steve will be a part of the “CMA Songwriter Series” at Joe’s Pub in New York, where he will share the stage with Atlantic recording country artist Brett Eldredge and Tia Sillers. These two concerts will be hosted by Bob DiPiero. “I did this series a couple of years and Bob is a great host. We will be doing some new songs that I have written for this new album, as well as some of my older hits. It’s going to be great,” he said.
In addition to his New York shows, Steve will also perform five concerts in Texas, where his first performance will be at Midnight Rodeo in Austin, Texas, on August 2. “We are playing in Austin and then we get to play in some other cool areas. It’s always fun in Texas and I really like playing there since I have performed there so many times over the years. I enjoy the culture there and the food is great,” he said.
Throughout his career, Steve is the recipient of four Grammy awards, four Country Music Association (CMA) awards, as well as one Academy of Country Music (ACM) award. Fourteen of his songs have reached the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts and Steve has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1996; moreover, he was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2011, among other honors. “I had always wanted to be a member of the Opry and I always loved it as a kid,” he recalled. “That was a real thrill to be asked to be a part of the family.”
An accomplished guitarist, Steve was mentored by the late country legend Chet Atkins. The Indiana native is also an acclaimed songwriter who has written hit songs for such country stars as Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, Clint Black and Bryan White. “I grew up on Chet Atkins’ music, especially since my father used to listen to a lot of his records. I was very aware of who he was and his producing. He and I became such good friends and he was a big inspiration. I learned so much from him about life. Chet took me to countries that I had never seen before and those were wonderful experiences. Chet was a great man and he was indescribable,” Steve said.
