Do you enjoy watching DVDs of TV shows from the '50s and '60s? Image Entertainment has issued stellar seasons of Combat! and The Twilight Zone you'll want to add to your collection.
The business of making decades-old television shows available on DVD is not only meant for those looking for a way to relive their youth. Consider these films historical documents, offering those who weren’t around in the 50s and 60s a look at the life and ideas of that time.
Image Entertainment is in the business of releasing such programming on DVD and offers a vast catalogue of television shows and movies on their website. Although two of their more recent offerings have been previously available, the new reissues will be kinder to your pocketbook.
Combat! The Complete Fourth Season
was originally released as two sets in 2005: Combat! Season Four, Conflict One and Combat! Season Four Conflict Two. Each set had a suggested retail price of $39.98. For the same price, Image now offers the complete 31 episode season on eight DVDs.
Combat! was a show that ran on ABC from 1962 to 1967. It starred Vic Morrow as Sergeant “Chip” Saunders and Rick Jason as Second lieutenant Gil Hanley, who with their squad, fought the Germans in France in WWII. The show was groundbreaking both for the grittiness and realism of its stories and its focus on how war affected the soldiers psychologically. It was one of the first shows meant for guys that women could enjoy too.
Season Four boasts an array of top-notch guest stars such as John Cassevetes, Keenan Wynn, Sal Mineo, Ted Knight, and Leonard Nimoy. In "S.I.W.", Cassevetes plays a soldier whose leg wound is suspected of being self-inflicted. Nimoy plays a private in "The Raider," an episode in which Saunders must rescue Hanley from the clutches of a Nazi SS man.
The set also contains welcome extras such as audio commentaries by actor Ben Cooper, director George Fenady, and writer Shirl Hendryx. "Notes, Oddities and Bloopers" are available for almost every episode.
Another set recently reissued by Image is The Twilight Zone: The Complete Third Season. This is an excellent collection of 37 episodes on 5 DVDs from the series that inspired The X-Files, The Outer Limits and so many other shows of the supernatural.
If you are a fan of Rod Serling’s masterful anthology series, you are sure to remember many of these classic episodes. “It’s a Good Life” is an especially memorable and horrific offering. It features Billy Mumy as the spooky little boy who sends adults to the much feared “corn field” for having bad thoughts. A very young Robert Redford plays the role of Death in “Nothing In the Dark,” a particularly poignant episode about an old woman whose time has come but is afraid to die.
Unlike the Combat! set, The Twilight Zone: The Complete Third Season contains no extras. When it was originally released as The Twilight Zone: Season Three (the Definitive Collection), it included episode commentaries and the like along with a hefty price tag of $69.98. With the new reissue you get all 37 episodes without the bonus content for $29.98. A slight disappointment, yes, but the quality of the episodes and the clarity of the prints more than make up for it.
You can find these and other classic TV shows and movies for sale at the Image Entertainment website and other online retailers.
