article imageToddler uses dad's smartphone to buy vintage car on eBay

A toddler was playing with her dad's smartphone and to her parent's surprise, ended up buying a car while surfing eBay. Her purchase? A 1962 vintage car.
Recently, 14-month-old Sorella Stoute was playing with her dad's smartphone. While using the phone, she opened up her dad's apps and was checking out eBay. While on the auction site, she ended up buying a car, a vintage 1962 Austin Healey Sprite, for $225, reported Mashable.
Her father had no idea she'd been shopping until he got the email from eBay notifying him his bid was the winner. He knew he didn't make any bid and thought at first it was a phishing scam. But he checked and found the email was no mistake or fraud. It turns out his toddler placed the bid.
"She decided to open the eBay app, and started clicking around and one thing led to another and we own a car," Paul Stoute told KOIN 6 News.
Initially, he'd tried to return the car to the seller, who was understanding about the mistake.
"The seller was very nice and allowed us out of the sale and contacted the previous bidder to see if they wanted to purchase the car still," Stoute wrote on his website.
He noted the seller pointed out the toddler's "superlative taste."
“Your kid is obviously a car aficionada with superlative taste, and this would make a great father-kid project that you might just finish in time for them to drive as a first car!” the seller responded.
Reportedly, her parents had an "initial panic" when learning their daughter bought a car, but then laughed about the incident. A great story to tell down the road.
In the end, the Stoutes decided to keep the car and borrowed the money to cover the bid.
"I’m just glad she didn’t buy the $38,000 Porsche I was looking at," Stoute told KOIN 6 News.
They hope to raise funds through Smartypig to restore the fixer-upper and give it to Sorella for her 16th birthday or graduation.
Stoute said he has since added facial recognition technology and a PIN to protect his phone. He also deleted the eBay app.
