article imageOp-Ed: Willow Smith, 12, has a new inappropriate, exploitative video

By Marcus Hondro     Jul 11, 2013 in Entertainment
Is it me or do we not need a video featuring a 12-year-old trying to be sexy while singing about a summer fling? Willow Smith's parents maybe don't care that their daughter is being shamelessly exploited, but maybe you and I should.
Willow, the 12-year-old, looks bizarre in the video of the song 'Summer Fling.' The make-up, along with the efforts at an adult expression, don't make for a very wholesome combination. She has on what may be a blond wig and is in a bathing suit and is so skinny and small she could be a year or two removed from being a toddler.
But there she is holding hands with a guy who looks, oh, 16, and they're staring dreamily into one another's eyes while she sings (rather timorously): "It's just a couple months but we do it anyway. Don't really care what we do tonight. Good night kisses if the mood is right, laying by the beach with you wishing this will never end."
Is the singing good? Not really. SHE'S 12 YEARS OLD! Heck, even Justin Bieber was all of 15 when he started hitting the charts. Twelve? Do we need 12-year-old sex symbols? Or is it a sign that the Apocalypse is coming???!!!!
The song is being reviewed seriously by entertainment sites and though some question her age as we are here at Digital Journal, most are shamelessly waxing on about how rad her hairstyle is (it looks like a blond mop) and how the video takes place at an exciting pool party full of fun loving teens in bathing suits. It's all rather puerile.
A lot of contemporary teen music, is about getting young people to watch product and buy things, about getting them to jump on the consumer train, I get that. That alone is lamentable but when it sexualizes kids if parents aren't going to say no, and clearly Willow Smith's parents don't consider it an issue, we must do our bit.
We must discourage — even forbid? — our children from watching and talk to them about why it is not appropriate. It's an uphill battle, this kind of thing is becoming the norm, but we have to keep fighting it because no, we do not need a video of a 12-year-old singing about a summer fling. After all, our kids will have plenty of time to be adults later.
Let's allow them to be kids now.
