Nothing that follows should be taken to impugn the presumption of innocence to which "the worst offender is entitled under [the US] Constitution," in the words of Jerry Guerinot
. In case you hadn't noticed, accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has amassed a considerable fan club. Let's face it, the photograph of him released to the media — this one here, is cute. On looks alone he would certainly not be out of place in a boy band. That point and many others were made by the YouTube pundit who calls himself The Amazing Atheist. Be warned, some of his comments
are not suitable either for young children or persons of a nervous disposition.
The aforementioned video was made two months ago, but as of 07.30 London time this morning, the Facebook group Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is innocent - Free Jahar
had 13,478 members, and that is not the only one. Some fans were present yesterday when he appeared in court
to plead not guilty to a plethora of charges.
As our atheist friend points out, there have been in the past and are daffy women who have expressed similar support for Ted Bundy
, who in a bizarre moment actually married one of his supporters while on trial for murder. The same can be said of the recently deceased and not sorely missed Richard Ramirez
. One can sometimes judge a book by its cover, but clearly there are limits. It has to be said though that it is not only male killers — alleged and convicted — who attract such support, and not all the supporters are women. Awhile back Linda Carty attracted a large following of the gullible after a campaign of shameless lies by Clive Stafford Smith and his Reprieve organisation
. Rich posh boy and mass killer Jeremy Bamber
has fans of both sexes, albeit increasingly few, and there were even those who campaigned for Moors Murderess Myra Hindley
, now long departed from this Earth. To this day, Charles Manson receives fan mail, and one of his acolytes, Susan Atkins
, married not one but two of her supporters. Incredible though it may seem, this mass murderess was even allowed conjugal visits for a while, a privilege that where allowed should clearly be confined to prisoners who are already married and who are due at some point to be released, as a means of keeping families together.
It remains to be seen if Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will marry one of his supporters, but it should surprise no one if he has had several marriage proposals already.
