Campinas - Brazilian rapper MC Daleste was shot in the abdomen Saturday night during a performance in Campinas, Brazil. He died early Sunday after being taken to a nearby hospital.
The 20-year-old performer, whose real name is Daniel Pellegrine, was mid-song when he was struck by a bullet, Billboard reports. He fell back into a sitting position and others came onto the stage to help him.
The incident was caught on video and uploaded to YouTube. The video has had four million views.
Pellegrine was reportedly performing at a public housing building in the San Martin neighborhood. No information has been released on suspects or arrests.
A Facebook page attributed to the fallen artist has been filled with messages and tributes since Saturday's shooting.
On Sunday, a friend posted that Pellegrine was a "victim of intolerance."
The friend continued, "I hope God gives strength to the family, friends, and fans of my good friend of MC Daleste, a guy who only wanted to convey joy to everyone through his music. It is a pity that the peace which we dream of, we often only get when we close our eyes."
MC Daleste was a member of the "Ostentatious Funk" scene, which is centered in Sao Paulo, HipHopDX reports. The music is described as a "bling obsessed and violent brand of rap over looped beats."
On "Apologia," one of MC Daleste's songs, he raps "Killing the police is our goal" and recites a list of weapons over repeated sounds of gunfire, Billboard reports.
"This is one more sad event in a long history of urban violence in Brazil," Sao Paulo native and New York based DJ and producer Beco Dranoff said. "Music should be the peaceful medium that connects us all for good times and for change."
