Customized apparel is nothing new but for the average consumer, it is. Typically we think of the rich and famous ordering customized everything, but that market is opening up.
Referred to as “middle market clothing customization” in a recent article in Business Insider, more average consumers are wanting customized apparel for a reasonable cost. In our world of social media and tech everything, it is not surprising that more and more people are seeking customized apparel, and there are a number of companies on the forefront of this middle market customization craze.
In a recent Forbes article on this made-to-order trend gone mainstream, the writer cites several ways companies can benefit from this transition as well. Beyond the obvious cost savings of not having an actual building to maintain and pay for, companies who offer online customization services also benefit from the appeal and novelty of it all. Customized apparel reaches all ages, and for a variety purposes, so the potential consumer is much larger. From sports teams to book clubs and everything in between, everyone has their own reasons for customized apparel, and there are now companies to fit each individual need.
One of the top made-to-order men’s apparel companies is Indochino. This company promises essentials for the modern man and offers a unique process where customers can choose their style, customize the suit with a variety of options, and even get measured online. There is always free shipping and a four-week guarantee.
Shoe stores have taken advantage of the custom craze with companies like Hourglass Footwear, offering a shoe shopping experience like nowhere else. Hourglass Footwear has customers choose their favorite style of shoe, from platforms to flats, and then choose a design where they then paint your pair to order, waterproof them and send them your way. The average cost is about $200 per pair, but for many, a customized shoe is well worth the price, and you can have a little fun along the way too.
Customized apparel is also extending into the event and sports marketing arena with more companies offering event on-site customization, pre-printed apparel, or bulk blank apparel for your own customization. Fine Designs has been offering customized apparel for over 20 years and has just recently broken into this market of instant customization with their on-site event designs. For sports teams or family reunions, this service has extended the possibility for customized clothing options into every arena.
Who’s to say where this customized trend in shoes and apparel will take fashion, but it is entirely possible that more mainstream brick and mortar stores are going to take a hint from these companies and start offering more possibilities when it comes to the sizing, style and appearance of clothing.
