A new document from the Department of Homeland Security discusses the potential misuse of fireworks that are readily available for not only the average Independence Day fanatic but dangerous terrorists as well!
Yet again, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has taken a common object readily available to the public and pointed out the ways it can be misused by terrorists. I have previously reported on the DHS and FBI's statements that coffee grinders, exploding targets, cameras, and vehicles can be used to carry out a terrorists attack. Well, you can now add fireworks to the list.
On June 28, 2013, just a few days before Independence Day, The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation released a join bulletin on the potential misuse of commercial fireworks by terrorists. They cited the fact that fireworks were recovered from the backpack of one of the Boston Bombing suspects as well as events from 2010 and 2012. In addition to this they also released a list of what they consider to be "suspicious activity" that should be reported. The list includes buying a large amount of fireworks, buying fireworks during "off-season" months, and asking about the potential damage of fireworks.
