Syrian opposition calls for international help in Homs

By Sami Zaatari     Jul 5, 2013 in World
Homs - The main Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), has called on the international community to come to the humanitarian aid for the city of Homs.
Rebel-held areas in the central city of Homs have been under fierce bombardments and attacks by government soldiers, who've launched an operation to try and retake rebel held districts.
The SNC called on the UN and the Friends of Syria to get involved in order to help the civilians of the city:
The Syrian Coalition issues an urgent appeal to the United Nations, its affiliated organizations, and the group of Friends of Syria to intervene immediately to provide humanitarian access into the besieged areas of Dara’a and Homs.
The group also accused the Lebanese group Hezbollah of fighting alongside Assad's troops in the city of Homs:
The Assad regime, supported by Hezbollah’s militias, continues to shell the neighborhoods in Old Homs. Homs has been under bombardment by Assad's regime for five consecutive days and clashes on front lines intensified earlier today.
Activists in the city have reported heavy bombing of rebel-held areas today, calling the strikes some of the heaviest the city has seen in years.
Syrian soldiers have managed to surround the rebel held areas in the city, with activists saying that the operation is going building by building, and block at a time by the Syrian army in order to clear the areas of rebels.
The Syrian army operation in the city of Homs is the latest in government offensives to have been carried out over the past few months in at attempt to regain the initiative and gain back areas held by the rebels. Last month the Syrian army alongside Hezbollah scored a major victory in the province of Homs, when they captured the strategic town of Qusayr and it's surrounding areas and villages. Should the army manage to fully retake the city of Homs, it would further solidify the government's hold on central Syria.
