article image'Monsters' win but 'The Heat' is a solid, sizzling surprise

By Tim O'Brien     Jun 30, 2013 in Entertainment
It was another win for "Monsters University." But it was the solid outing for female leads in "The Heat" that should take notice.
Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock teamed up and beat Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx in a buddy battle at the box office. While much of the hype was centered on another disaster for Washington D.C., the female duo came in and stole the weekend. That possibility wasn't lost here as it was duly noted.
To some, it may have come as real surprise. But, a film starring McCarthy cannot be overlooked at this time. She has a track record. Add in a box office star in Bullock and it was hotter than the "White House Down" team.
Weekend
1. "Monsters University" - $45.6 million
2. "The Heat" - $39.1 million
3. "World War Z" - $29.7 million
4. "White House Down" - $24.8 million
5. "Man of Steel" - $20.7 million
Another surprise was the third place showing for a solid "World War Z." It took took down the White House as well. And overseas, it led the way. As June continues to sizzle in the states, it is these surprises that help the overall box office overcome some weak weekends.
Now, as noted in the last report, female audiences came out to see Bullock and McCarthy. They no doubt did for Tatum and Foxx, but not enough. According to Box office Mojo, woman represented 65 percent of the audience for "The Heat." Of that, 67 percent was over the age of 25. In the male-dominated buddy flicks, "The Heat" now sits at No. 7 for best opening weekends for that genre.
A head's up is in order here as July 4 is on Thursday and that means a holiday report with all those extra numbers are coming.
