Rome - An Italian pedophile priest imprisoned for sexually abusing young boys claims that Vatican clergy have been involved in an underage male prostitution ring, as well as in satanism, with the aid of a former national military policeman.
International Business Times reports Italian investigators are probing claims made by 46-year-old Don Patrizio Poggi, who served five years behind bars for molesting boys at the San Filippo Neri church in Rome, that an ex-Carabinieri officer recruited underage boys to sexually service nine Vatican clergymen.
The boys, who according to Il Messaggero were mostly "starving and desperate" Eastern European immigrants, were recruited by the former officer outside a gay bar called Twink near the Termini train station in central Rome, as well as at other venues frequented by gay men in the capital. The children were allegedly lured into prostitution with "false work offers for modeling and acting roles," Poggi claims.
Once recruited, the boys were reportedly paid between €150 and €500 ($195-$650) to have sex with priests on church properties throughout Rome.
Poggi also alleges that Vatican clergy participated in satanic rituals, with 'consecrated hosts' recruited by the same former Carabinieri officer who procured the 'rent boys.'
Poggi claims he decided to reveal this alleged behavior for the well-being of Christianity.
"I decided to file this complaint and cooperate with the law after long reflection and after a painful history of abuse and misuse of power that I have overcome thanks to the faith that guides me," Poggi told police. "I feel obliged to protect the Holy Church and the Christian community since I am aware of grave facts that undermine their integrity and break canon and penal law."
Huffington Post UK reports Poggi also named 20 alleged pedophile clergymen, including four priests and a Monsignor-- to authorities.
The Vatican is denying Poggi's accusations, claiming the disgraced priest is acting out of vengeance.
The office of Cardinal Agostino Vallini, head of the Catholic Vicariate of Rome, issued a statement asserting that "the cardinal expresses his full confidence in the magistracy and declares himself fully convinced that this slander will be demolished... God will hold everyone accountable for their deeds."
The new allegations come just weeks after Pope Francis acknowledged the existence of a 'gay lobby' at work inside the Vatican, something the Church had originally denied.
