article imageInterview with soul singer-songwriter Caleb Hawley Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jun 28, 2013 in Entertainment
New York - On June 22, I chatted in-person with soul singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Caleb Hawley at a well-known coffee house in New York City, near the Empire State Building.
A Minneapolis, Minnesota, native, Caleb graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music with a degree in jazz composition and he received top honors for his songwriting ability in the New York Songwriters Circle Contest, as well as the John Lennon Songwriting Content, the Telluride Festival, the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and Rocky Mountain Folks Fest.
He was a part of the 2011 season of “American Idol,” where he placed in the Top 50. His performance of the Ray Charles classic “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” inspired then-judge Steven Tyler from Aerosmith to clap and sing along with him.
On his newest single, “Little Miss Sunshine,” Caleb remarked, “The song is out and I am putting out a video for it, which I am psyched about. It has an anti-bullying theme to it and I was inspired to write it from my niece. I am big on lyrics and I wanted to stress the fact that is important to be an individual and people resonated with that song.”
He noted that he has been playing guitar since the age of twelve. “I started out on acoustic guitar and quickly went to electric guitar, where I tried to play Nirvana and Metallica. I went through a big metal phase which is nice since it inspired me to learn how to play fast,” he recalled.
Regarding his future plans, Caleb noted that he will release at least two singles during the summer. “I have a few live videos coming out and I would like to get my new album out.”
He has been influenced by such artists as Randy Newman, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, as well as D’ Angelo, Outkast and Beyonce. “I came from a family that listened to acoustic and folk music, which is why I was doing acoustic music for a while, but I was always the black sheep since I listened to a lot of different things,” he said.
Although he is a huge fan of such songstresses as Beyonce and Brandi Carlile, he listed Adele as his dream female duet choice. “I have the perfect song for her, so I would love to sing with Adele since she is a superstar,” he said. “Brandi Carlile is a powerhouse and she can really belt it. I remember seeing Brandi when she was first starting out and I was blown away by her voice.”
