Aaron Hernandez, formerly of the New England Patriots, was the center of a murder investigation after police discovered a body near his house in Massachusetts on Wednesday morning.
According to Fox, The Patriots announced Hernandez's release two hours after his arrest was announced.
According to USA Today, Hernandez is facing six criminal charges, one of them being first degree murder.
The criminal complaint states that Hernandez assaulted the victim, Odin Lloyd, with an intent to murder him, and then killed him by assaulting and beating him.
According to CBS, prosecutors say that Hernandez killed Lloyd over a dispute at a nightclub in Boston on June 14. However, prosecutors did not say what exactly angered him.
Assistant District Attorney Bill McCauley said that Hernandez and two friends picked Lloyd up around 2:30AM on June 17, and surveillance footage of his home showed him leaving earlier in the day with a gun. The prosecutor also said that Hernandez told someone in the house that he was upset and that he could not trust anyone anymore.
McCauley said that after Hernandez picked Lloyd they had a conversation between each other, and shortly after that Lloyd texted his sister telling her who he was with. That was around 3:22 a.m. and shortly after that people heard gunshots.
Investigators said that it is not clear who fired the shots. Michael Fee, Hernandez's attorney, said that the case against his client is not a strong case and it is a completely circumstantial case.
