article imageRussia pulls military forces out of Syrian port

By Paul Iddon     Jun 26, 2013 in Politics
Russia has reportedly withdrawn all of its civilian and military personnel from their strategic port of Tartus in Syria.
France 24 and the Jerusalem Post report that the Russian Federation has withdrawn all of its forces and left their naval center in the Tartus Port empty.
The primary source of information pertaining to this development came from the Russian Vedomosti daily.
There now seems to be no Russian personnel in Syria. This is an apparent bid on the part of the Russian government to ensure that Russians aren't endangered by the conflict raging in the country.
Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, was quoted as saying, "Today, the Russian defense ministry does not have a single person in Syria. In Tartus, we never had a base in the first place. It is a technical facility for maintaining ships sailing in the Mediterranean."
