The author Richard Matheson has died today, according to the Daily Telegraph. He was born Richard Burton Matheson was born on February 20, 1926 at Allendale, a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey. Matheson was a U.S. author and screenwriter, who wrote primarily in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres. The book which made him famous, not least for the several movie adaptations, was his 1954 novel I Am Legend.
The novel was influential in the development of the zombie genre and in popularizing the concept of a worldwide apocalypse due to disease. The three movie adaptations were The Last Man on Earth in 1964 (which starred Vincent Price), The Omega Man in 1971, and I Am Legend in 2007 (starring Will Smith).
Another of his novels, The Shrinking Man (1956), was also filmed. As well as novels, SFX recounts that Matheson wrote 14 episodes of the television series The Twilight Zone, as well as writing for Star Trek.
According to Nick Owchar, in the LA Times: "Ever since he started writing for sci-fi magazines and for 'The Twilight Zone" adding that Matheson had a "genius for hard-wiring an entertaining story to the deepest and darkest impulses of human nature and human destiny."
In 1984 Matheson won the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award, and he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2010.
Commenting on Matheson's death, Steven Spielberg told the BBC: "Richard Matheson's ironic and iconic imagination created seminal science-fiction stories and gave me my first break when he wrote the short story and screenplay for Duel. His Twilight Zones were among my favourites, and he recently worked with us on Real Steel. For me, he is in the same category as [Ray] Bradbury and [Isaac] Asimov."
