article image8-year-old girl allegedly killed by sex offender in Florida

By Owen Weldon     Jun 22, 2013 in Crime
An 8-year-old girl was abducted by a sex offender while shopping with her mother on Friday night. The man, Donald James Smith, was arrested and charged with murdering her.
Charish Perriwinkle's body was found in Jacksonville on Saturday morning, according to Daily Mail.
James was arrested after his white van was cornered by police. This comes after he was released from jail on May 31, after serving less than two years on felony charges of child abuse, as well as impersonation of a public employee.
According to SF Gate, Smith, who is a registered sex offender, met the girl and her mother at a dollar store, and he offered to take her to Wal-Mart to buy her and her family clothes.
Mike Williams, director of investigations at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, said that the family appeared down on their luck, and he acted like he could offer them a hand.
Williams said that the group then went to Wal-Mart and spent a few hours there, and then Smith offered to buy hamburgers for Charish. The two then went to the front of the store, but instead of buying a snack, they left the building and went into Smith's van.
According to CNN, police say that getting Smith into custody ended up being a huge break for them once the girl was reported missing.
Smith will now appear in court on Sunday morning.
