article imageOprah Winfrey's Next Chapter to star honest actor Gabrielle Union

By Marcus Hondro     Jun 22, 2013 in Entertainment
There are few things that inspire more than direct honesty, especially when that honesty puts the speaker in a bad light. So it is that actor Gabrielle Union came to inspire her fellow actor, Oprah Winfrey. She did it in a speech at a Hollywood luncheon
"We live in a town that rewards pretending," Union told the audience, including Winfrey, at Essence magazine's yearly Black Women in Hollywood pre-Oscars luncheon, on Feb. 21. "I used to revel in gossip and rumors. I lived for the negativity inflicted upon my sister actresses or anyone who I felt, whose shine diminished my own. I took joy in people's pain and I tap danced on their misery."
Oprah: Paying "rapt attention"
Those were Union's brave words as she accepting her '2013 Fierce and Fearless' award from Essence and while many in that audience noted how inspiring Union was, it's not likely any were more taken by her words than Winfrey.
"I had never heard anyone be that honest in public or private about the competition and fierce drive to be seen and succeed in Hollywood," Winfrey wrote on her OWN website about Union's talk. "That competition is even more charged for women of color because of the dearth of roles. So I was inspired by Gabrielle's speech to break open the truth and have a real conversation."
Winfrey notes that when Union opened up as she did the room paid "rapt attention." The truth draws an audience and earns respect and Winfrey clearly found Union`s willingness to go there laudable.
Gabrielle Union on Oprah's OWN
It seemed then a foregone conclusion that Union, who`s been a series regular on many TV shows including 'Night Stalker' and 'Flash Forward' and has a lengthy list of movie credits, would soon turned up on Oprah's Next Chapter on OWN. That is indeed the case this Sunday at 9 pm when Winfrey features Union and three other hugely talented black female actors, Viola Davis, Alfre Woodard and Phylicia Rashad.
Topics the four will discuss with their host include how they see themselves perceived by others and how they perceive their own careers. Doubtless Union, and the rest, will do so with honesty.
