Matt Smith channels Bob Dylan in a “thank-you” video he’s made, to fans for their support during his time on Doctor Who.
As reported by Digital Journal three weeks ago, Smith – who has played the Eleventh Doctor since the beginning of 2010 in the BBC’s fifty-year-old science-fiction drama series – will be leaving the show at the end of 2013.
Currently, the 30-year-old British actor is in America, where he is filming How to Catch a Monster, the directorial debut feature of Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling.
It’s in the States that Smith made his mini-“than-you” movie, taking his inspiration from the film that accompanied Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues”.
Dylan made his video – which was subsequently included in D. A. Pennebaker’s Don’t Look Back (1965) – in London, while in the UK on tour; whereas, Smith chose Detroit, while filming in the US.
After holding up a series of hand-written cards, Smith continues with:
Doctor Who-land, listen, this is a message to say thank you for all your support over the past four years, to Steven Moffat, all the brilliant cast and crew who’ve just made the whole journey a marvelous one.
But really what makes this job truly spectacular is the fans and the support from the fans is truly unique. And it’s meant a lot, so thank you.
During the video, Smith also thanks his co-stars – the three actors who have played his regular TARDIS travelling companions during his tenure – Karen Gillan (who he refers to as “the crazy ginger one”) Arthur Darvill (“the one with the nose and funny bones”) and Jenna (formerly Jenna-Louise] Coleman (“the impossible girl in the short red dress”).
Smith will be back in the UK in time for filming of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, which is now expected to commence in August/September.
Twelfth Who?
As to his successor, many names have emerged in the past fortnight, including Rory Kinnear (whom the Telegraph claimed had already been offered the role), Sheridan Smith (who would become the first woman to play the part) and Eric Lampaert.
However, the BBC are currently considering who will play the Twelfth Doctor. According to the Radio Times, a formal announcement as to who he or she is will be made shortly before the start of filming of the as-yet-untitled episode.
