Playa Del Carmen - Walter Lee Williams, 64, a former University of Southern California professor, was arrested in Mexico and flown to Los Angeles Wednesday. He is accused of engaging in web-cam sex acts with underage boys in the Philippines and other crimes.
The person who told authorities is a Mexican citizen and eligible for the $100,000 reward leading to Williams' arrest, said Bill Lewis, assistant director in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles field office.
Reportedly, listing Williams as a top ten “fugitive is what really led to his capture,” said Lewis. He was located after appearing on the FBI's Most Wanted List for one day.
Williams, an ex-professor, specialized in anthropology, history and gender studies and has more victims according to Michael Moore, assistant chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.
He is charged with one count of producing child pornography, one count of traveling for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places, according to the US Department of Justice.
Allegedly, in 2010, Williams met the boys online and engaged in sex acts with both of them over a web cam, per UALRpublicradio.org. In Jan. 2011, he traveled to the Philippines and allegedly had sexual contact with both boys and “produced sexually explicit photos” of one of them.
After returning from the Philippines, Williams’ computer was seized. FBI Special Agent Jeff Yesensky said, “I analyzed the computers and the camera that belong to Williams and found child pornography.” Officials believed Williams fled to Mexico, but the location was unknown until they received a tip from an unnamed person who recognized Williams from a newspaper photo.
Yesensky said because of Williams' status, he was able to access children easily and “that's what makes him dangerous.” He chose to prey on the most vulnerable children.
Thus far, only children outside the United States have been identified as victims. Lewis says there are others who have been victimized by Williams and the FBI would like to speak with them, per an ABCnews.go.com report.
