Baku - The 2013 Univision Song Contest begins today in the Azerbaijan capital, Baku, with the final scheduled to be held at the Heydar Aliyev Palace this Friday, 21 June.
The first-ever Univision Song Contest took place in Baku in 2012—when students from 26 universities took part—and is organised jointly by the Union of Young Student Organizations of Azerbaijan and the country’s Ministry for Youth and Sports.
The contest’s slogan—“Be the first!”—was chosen prior to the 2012 event, following a competition held through Azerbaijan’s universities. According to the Azerbaijan News Network, 100 slogan proposals were made from students attending universities all over the country, including Baku Slavic University, Baku State University, Azerbaijan University of Languages, Khazar University and the University of Economics.
Vestnik Kavkaza reports that for the second Univision Song Contest, a total of 20 countries are taking part, from all over Europe, Asia and America.
This year, contestants will be joined by two guests: Eldar Gasimov—who, together with Nigar Jamal, as Ell & Nikki—won the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest for Azerbaijan with their song “Running Scared”; and Farid Mammadov, who achieved second place—to Denmark’s Emmelie de Forrest —in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, held on 18 May in Malmö, Sweden, with “Hold Me”.
As with the Eurovision Song Contest, the Azerbaijani state broadcaster Muz TV will broadcast the event live.
