Montreal - Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum was arrested on Monday and charged with 14 different counts, including fraud in two real estate deals.
Applebaum took over office last November after mayor Gérald Tremblay stepped down with allegations of illegal spending and corruption by his own political party. The Interim Applebaum had made promises to get rid of dirty politicians and make Canada's second largest city proud.
Canada has been hit hard of late with political scandal as Toronto mayor Rob Ford was accused by local media of smoking crack cocaine, but Ford has denied these claims and as yet, refused to relinquish his position.
Local police have reported that the illegal deals included secret payments and tens of thousands of dollars have exchanged hands, but the mayors spokesman Jonathan Abecassis has yet to respond to the allegations.
The charges, which also include conspiracy, municipal corruption, and breach of trust to place between 2006 and 2011 when Applebaum served as mayor for the borough of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in Montreal.
