Pittsburgh - Gerrit Cole picked up his first Major League victory with a superb performance against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday evening.
Cole was the first overall draft pick in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates and he made his debut with the big club, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out two batters to earn the win with an 8-2 victory.
The 22 year-old right-handed pitcher also helped himself at the plate with a two run singles in the bottom of the second inning to open the scoring for the Pirates.
Cole pitched well in Triple-A ball this season and has fast tracked his way to the Pirates with some terrific pitching over the last year. The former star at UCLA admitted he wasn't really nervous about his first start and it showed with a strikeout of the first batter he faced on just three pitches.
The victory improved the Pirates record to 38-26 on the year and four games behind St Louis for the top spot in the NL Central. San Francisco dropped to 33-30 for the 2013 MLB season and two games behind Arizona in the NL West race.
These two teams still have two more games remaining in this series played in Pittsburgh with Barry Zito (4-4) taking the mound on Wednesday for the Giants as he will face Francisco Liriano (4-2). Both teams will be battling for a victory to keep pace in their race for a division title.
