article imageOprah Winfrey calls fundraising kids in Florida, donates $100,000

By Marcus Hondro     Jun 11, 2013 in World
Oprah Winfrey made a $100,000 donation to Mikey's Run, a charity two young brothers in Florida began to raise funds for victims of the Boston bombing. Winfrey did it by simply phoning the boys up at their home/headquarters in Ft. Lauderdale.
“It was really random. Michael answered and she said, ‘Hi, this is Oprah Winfrey,’” Harris Stolzenberg, 18, told the New York Daily News. “Then she told him she wanted to make the donation and he gave me the phone.”
Goal of 1 million for bombing victims
The guy who answered the phone and who Harris was talking about, Michael Stolzenberg, is Harris' brother and the one whom the charity is named after. Michael, or Mikey, is 13 and five years ago lost his hands and feet to a bacterial infection.
By all accounts, Mikey has a full life going--he plays lacrosse and football--and he wanted to help amputee victims of the marathon bombing achieve goals like he can. That's why he started the charity and that's why his goal is so ambitious - to raise $1 million.
The brothers are determined to get to their goal, despite it being such a lofty one. They haven't said if they'll deliver the cheque to Boston themselves but next year Harris will run in the Boston marathon. This year they have a big fundraiser coming up on July 27 in Ft. Lauderdale’s Pine Crest School.
Mikey's Run has a website where you can donate and see for yourself how the total is climbing. It's biggest jump of course comes thanks to Oprah, who bumped their total to a little over $200,000. For Michael and Harris having their charity get that much money in one fell swoop was wonderful and so was getting to talk to Oprah Winfrey.
“At first, I was shocked, but once you talk to her she’s just very nice,” said Harris. “It was almost like I knew her.”
