Philadelphia - The US Open Golf Championship is back in Philadelphia for the first time since 1981 as 156 of the top players in the world get ready to take on Merion.
Merion hosted the 1981 US Open and that was the last Major Championship for golf fans in the area, but this famed old course is set to challenge the games best players this week with the playing of the 2013 US Open and with the long rough and deep bunkers, worlds number one Tiger Woods and the other 155 golfers are in for a tough challenge.
This venue has hosted the most U.S.G.A. Championships on record and some very memorable moments in golf history, including the famous one iron hit to the 18th green back in 1950 by Ben Hogan, who won the event the following day in a playoff. These moments have shaped golf and become stories that have been handed down for generations, but new stories will emerge this week as the players begin their week with Thursdays opening round.
This will be the 18th Major held at Merion, which opened in 1896 and the sixth US Open. Changes have been made to the famed course to keep up with modern technology and bring hazards more in play, but putting the ball in the fairway, especially on the 15th hole where out of bounds is just a couple steps off the main landing area on the left hand side of the hole, will be imperative.
This course has a set of the most challenging par 3's anywhere and playing these holes without big mistakes is likely going to be the difference between contending or missing the cut.
One thing that will completely reshape the grounds is a 17,000 seat amphitheater built around the finishing hole, Those seats will account for nearly 70% of the public tickets each day and should be a great back drop as the players finish their rounds.
The 2013 US Open is set to begin play Thursday morning with some of the deepest rough and slickest greens imaginable. This area has a long rich history with the game of golf and more will be made this weekend with the crowning of a new champion.
