article imageVideo: BASE jumper lucky to live after hitting hotel in Benidorm

Benidorm - Austrian Maria Steinmayr, one of 17 competitors taking part in Benidorm's annual World Championship BASE jumping competition, was lucky to survive after crashing into the building on her way down.
BASE jumping is an activity where participants jump from fixed objects and use a parachute to break their fall. "BASE" is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: buildings, antennas, spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs).
Steinmayr, a 22-year-old BASE jumper, had already completed a successful leap from Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Tower at 320 metres.
However, Steinmayr was not so lucky when competing in the Valencian city of Benidorm.
Steinmayr started losing control soon after jumping off Benidorm's Hotel Bali, Europe's tallest hotel standing at 210 metres. After leaping from the 52-storey hotel on Friday and opening her parachute, she was propelled back towards the building and crashed into the skyscraper on her way down.
She managed to land on her feet on one of the hotel's upper floors and quickly made the attempt to complete her jump, pushing herself off the ledge and out into the void again. However, this move was unsuccessful and within seconds she was heading toward the building yet again, with no control over her landing.
Steinmayr went legs-first through the glass window of a balcony on the 10th floor and narrowly escaped the concrete beams on either side.
A British couple who were reportedly staying down the hall heard Steinmayr banging on doors for help and tended to her many cuts until medics arrived. She only suffered bruises to her elbows, knees and nose.
And for those wondering, Steinmayr's helmet cam ran out of batteries so she didn't capture the unexpected adventure.
