article imageTony Awards: 'Kinky Boots' kicks its way to six wins

By Tim O'Brien     Jun 9, 2013 in Entertainment
New York - With Neil Patrick Harris as host, the 67th Annual Tony Awards were handed out at Radio City Musical Hall in New York City tonight (June 9).
Going in it was a battle of two musicals, "Kinky Boots" and Matilda the Musical." Each saw momentum switches running up to Broadway's biggest night. In the end, it was "Kinky Boots" that won for best new musical. "Kinky Boots" won the night, too, capturing six awards while "Matilda the Musical" and "Pippin" each won four.
The Tony Awards, always known for great performances, ended as it opened. Big. What is usually not big are the ratings, however. And tonight, it had to go up against an NBA finals playoff games and the season finale of "Game of Thrones."
That was most likely not on the minds of theater-goers as performances packed the night and awards handed out. It was a night that saw Cyndi Lauper win with her "Boots" and inched one step closer to EGOT, which is winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. All that is left for her is Oscar.
Lauper won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1985. She won an Emmy for her guest appearance on "Mad About You" in 1995. And now she has a Tony, too.
As for plays, "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and "The Nance" won three each, respectively.
