Fort Worth - Helio Castroneves served notice that he is driven to being 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series champion with a win on the high-banked Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
“Everything was smooth,” said Castroneves. “(The car was) Running like a Swiss watch.”
Castroneves took over the lead of the race on Lap 97 and dominated the final 131 laps to win the Firestone 550 by 4.69 seconds. Ryan Hunter-Reay finished second and Indianapolis 500 champion Tony Kanaan was third.
“The Chevy guys did a great job because we were able not only to manage the tires, manage the fuel and it was set up,” said the race winner and overall points leader in the IZOD IndyCar Series. “We were just doing a lot of homework and it paid off. Thank God it paid off.”
The 2013 Firestone 550 was the fourth career win for Castroneves at the Texas Motor Speedway.
“I love this place. Texas is awesome,” Castroneves said after celebrating the win as is his custom, be climbing the home-stretch fence. “When I took the lead, I was able to go flat-out and side-by-side just about every lap. The car was absolutely on rails.”
The win in Texas moves Castroneves into sole possession of the point lead in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Marco Andretti, who was tied with Castroneves heading into this week’s race, drops 22 points off the pace, while Hunter-Reay remains third overall, 27 points in back of the leader.
The next stop on the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule is the Milwaukee IndyFest at the Milwaukee Mile, in West Allis (Wisconsin) on June 15.
