Greenbrae - Serial killer and devoted satanist Richard Ramirez has died, he was convicted 24 years ago of over a dozen homicides and suspected of many more.
After spending over 23 years on death row in California, Richard Ramirez the convicted serial killer dubbed the night stalker by the press has died of liver failure at 53-years-old.
Ramirez, who was convicted in 1989 of 13 counts of murder, 5 counts of attempted murder, 11 counts of sexual assault, and 14 counts of burglary in a crime spree that shocked the country, died at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, California.
According to the Daily Mail, Richard Ramirez had been taken out of San Quentin State Prison where he awaited execution to the hospital in Greenbrae, just two miles away. Ramirez was dying of liver failure and reportedly turned green before his death.
Despite his conviction for murder and rape, Ramirez attracted a large female following while in prison. So much so that in 1996 Ramirez married 41-year-old Doreen Lioy in a visiting room at San Quentin.
"I saw something in his eyes. Something that captivated me. It wasn't as if I knew him. But there was something in his eyes, maybe the vulnerability, I don't really know." Lioy said of her husband Richard Ramirez in 1996.
Seven years ago the California Supreme Court upheld his conviction and death sentence, the following year the U.S. Supreme Court refused to even hear his case. Just four years ago the San Francisco Police announced that DNA testing linked Ramirez to the 1984 murder of 9-year-old Mei Leung. The young girl was stabbed, beaten and raped by Ramirez in the Tenderloin district of the city by the bay.
Leung and her brother had gone into the basement of their apartment complex to look for a lost dollar bill. After missing for just half an hour, Leung's brother found her lifeless body hanging from a pipe.
Ramirez, an avowed Satanist, had been taken to Marin General Hospital just two weeks ago but was released.
"He was the color green," a source told the New York Post. "He looked like a green highlighter pen. He was sitting up in his bed doing stretches."
Upon hearing his verdict, Richard Ramirez curled his lip at the press and showed no remorse.
"Big deal. Death always went with the territory. See you in Disneyland."
