Op-Ed: English Defence League — No friends on the right either

By Alexander Baron     Jun 5, 2013 in Politics
The English Defence League is portrayed by the mainstream media as a closet Nazi organisation. Real Nazis are not impressed, including Harold Covington.
Earlier this week, the Northwest Front uploaded a near thirty-minute compilation video about the EDL to YouTube. It begins with the symbolic burning of a swastika flag - symbolic of what? - by a group of hooded activists, some of whom are clearly not white. The EDL also expresses its support for Israel - though it is not clear if this support extends to the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.
Although the burning of the swastika won't have gone down at all well with extremist elements on the far right, there are bigger issues here than disowning Adolf Hitler and whatever he is believed to stand for. Some of America's most notorious racists have been among the most outspoken critics of American and Western foreign policy towards the Islamic world, including David Duke and wicked Harold himself.
The EDL portrays Islamism as a problem for the West, and specifically for Britain. The reality is that Islamism is not the problem itself but a symptom of the problem, what has been called the hate that hate produced.
Whatever their views on Zionism and Jews generally, the likes of Harold Covington realise that attacking or scapegoating Muslims in the UK or Europe does nothing to address the real problem. Sick, twisted and perverted though the murder of Lee Rigby may have been, and the pathetic attempts by his murderers to to justify it, while our governments continue to support the illegal and murderous drone attacks on "militants"; while the US continues to hold men interned for more than a decade without charge, much less trial; while we endorse these and other inhuman policies through our silence, the Islamo-fascists will continue to enjoy and indeed garner the support they would once have received only from the minuscule lunatic fringe which exists in all societies.
No amount of flag waving by Tommy Robinson and his gang nor demonstrations outside the mosques of Britain addresses these issues, which lie firmly in the hands of our for the most part complacent politicians.
