Travel Media Group, a Maitland, Florida-based organization, describes
itself as "a leading provider of marketing services for the travel and hospitality industry."
It was in a recent press release
that TMG revealed "its top 5 favorite vacation destinations for summer 2013. While most Americans will choose more popular and well-known hot spots this summer, Travel Media Group recommends checking out some of these hidden gems."
One of the "hidden gems" is Tybee Island, Georgia, which came in at No. 2 with Mendocino, California taking the No. 1 spot. Travel Media Group states, "the small island city is home to a mile-long beach surrounded by grass-covered sand dunes and summer cottages. An added bonus for Tybee Island visitors is Savannah - only a short car ride away - and offering art, local culinary fare and a great southern atmosphere."
Some would argue that Tybee Island should be ranked No. 1 instead of No. 2, and locals
will also point out that there are "five miles of public beach" not one mile. This photo-tour of Tybee Island's beach areas will, however, reveal why Travel Media Group was absolutely right when it called it a hidden gem.
At the southernmost end of Tybee Island vacationers will see where sandbars divide the Atlantic ocean from Tybee Creek. It's a popular destination for kitesurfers
, and for those who enjoy watching kitesurfing. In addition, the beauty of the sunsets here is almost unrivaled.
A little farther north, visitors will find themselves at the Tybee Pier & Pavilion
. For a spectacular view of the island and the ocean, the place to go is Tybee Pier. And, of course, it's another great spot for swimming, fishing, and getting a tan.
Continuing north on Butler Avenue
will get visitors closer to the Tybee Island water tower
and to the DeSoto Beach Hotel
, which boasts of being "Tybee's ONLY Beachfront Hotel!"
At this mid-beach location, it is not unusual to see cargo ships making their way north to the Savannah River.
North Beach is home to the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum
as well as a place with surf, sand and fish that attracts many families. The waves crashing into North Beach's jetties (rocks) are one of this photographer's favorite things to photograph.
Tybee Island truly is a gem, and one that won't remain hidden for long. It's a great vacation destination for summer 2013.
