article imageConcerned citizen arrested for painting crosswalk on busy street

Vallejo - A man is arrested for trying to help his community by painting a pedestrian crosswalk on a four-lane street that he believes to be too dangerous to cross.
"If you cross the street right now, you can't it's unsafe," says Anthony Cardenas in a report by newscatcher31 as a response to why he painted a crosswalk on a busy four-lane street. Cardenas says, "I tried helping my community out. I got tired of seeing people get run over here all the time."
To help keep his community members safe, he took the initiative last Thursday morning and hand-painted his own crosswalk.
No matter how well intended Cardenas motives were, cops arrested him for felony vandalism, and say that it cost over $1000 to chip out the freshly painted crosswalk.
"Traffic division said there hadn't been any pedestrian-involved collisions in that area, so they're not sure what safety-related issues he was referring to," Vallejo Police Lt. John Whitney is reported as saying.
This intersection apparently already has three crosswalks with a legal crosswalk crossing the four lanes of traffic very close to where Cardenas painted his.
Puzzled neighbours are filmed asking Cardenas, now out on bail, why he would go to jail for trying to help.
