article imagePolk's Plus market continues a family tradition spanning decades Special

Pooler - For generations the Polk family has provided customers in the Savannah area with the freshest farm grown products around, and Hezekiah Polk's daughter, Becky, and her sons are continuing that tradition with their market in Pooler.
Becky Polk-Bashlor is the owner of Polk's Plus market in Pooler, a suburb of Savannah, Ga. According to Savannahnow.com, the first Polk's market opened in the old Savannah City Market about 80 years ago. Becky Polk-Bashlor's father and grandfather established the first market and Becky's brother, Jerry Polk, continued the tradition as owner of Polk's Fresh Market in downtown Savannah.
Just over two years ago, Polk's Fresh Market closed due to competition from local farmer's markets and the rising cost of doing business in downtown Savannah. That, however, is not the end of this "generation-spanning business," as Savannahnow.com calls it.
Polk-Bashlor opened her market, Polk's Plus, on U.S. 80 in Pooler two months after the closing of Polk's Fresh Market. Savannahnow.com reports that "Polk’s has consistently carried fresh produce, most of it from local farms, and Polk-Bashlor said she intends to continue that practice" and noted "The store specializes in selling vine-ripened tomatoes, local produce, boiled peanuts and plants from Florida."
After coming across Polk's Plus Facebook page, I decided to visit the market.

As promised by Polk-Bashlor, and advertised on the Facebook page, "fresh produce, plants, and more!" are abundant as can be seen in the photographs below.

The parking lot was full on this Saturday afternoon and customers were keeping Becky Polk-Bashlor busy at the register. She was, however, able to take a few moments to tell me how proud she is of the family tradition. Polk-Bashlor spoke of when she and her brother, Jerry, were children and would help their father at the market. One job Polk-Bashlor specifically remembered was bagging oranges. As we looked at family photos on the wall, she brought over another one. In the photograph below, Polk-Bashlor is holding a framed photograph showing her, at age 6, with her parents.

As Polk-Bashlor discussed her continued commitment to providing customers with fresh produce from local farms, and spoke of the work that her sons, Wesley and Barry, do for the market, a customer asked for a bag of Polk's Plus specialties...boiled peanuts. With a smile on her face, Becky Polk-Bashlor was more than happy to bring up a big ladle full of hot, boiled peanuts for her customer.
