article imageAmerican Idol-less: Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj tweet they quit

By Marcus Hondro     May 31, 2013 in Entertainment
Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey each tweeted Thursday that they are leaving American Idol. Both did just a year on the show and say they're focusing on their careers.
First it was Carey, who retweeted this tweet from her PR team: "W/ global success of "#Beautiful" (#1 in 30+ countries so far) @MariahCarey confirms world tour & says goodbye 2 Idol." Her recent single 'Beautiful' as the tweet suggests, has taken off big-time.
Then Minaj made her departure official: “Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn't trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!.”
The two had a fractious relationship on the show, sometimes exchanging barbs and pointed glances, but though it got some press never did they seem truly at odds.
Carey, Minaj and Jackson depart American Idol
Minaj was the more expressive on the show, often telling contestants how much she loved them and calling them cute names like 'honeybug' and 'ladybug'. Carey was more thoughtful but also heaped praise on contestants, frequently calling them 'darling.' Minaj was late getting to the studio on two occasions and missed the top of the show, the first time a judge managed that.
With Randy Jackson, the last of the original judges, already having left it leaves only Keith Urban on the panel. The list of past judges is now a long one: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Kara DioGuardi, Ellen DeGeneres, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Minaj, Carey and Jackson.
This year, season 12, the winner was 23-year-old Candice Glover. It was the first time that the final group of five contestants were all female.
Thus far, the scuttlebutt online from fans of the show is that neither Minaj or Carey will be missed.
