US & Them trailer warmly received on both sides of Atlantic

The first trailer for the American remake of Ruth Jones and James Corden’s popular British sitcom, Gavin & Stacey, has been given a cautious thumbs up from both countries.
The announcement that the Barry/Essex-based Gavin & Stacey was to be remade in America was received with some surprise last month, with the Independent pointing to the less-than-successful translations of some other British sitcoms, such as Absolutely Fabulous and The Inbetweeners.
However, on seeing the first official trailer, the paper suggests that US & Them has the potential of the more successful US remake of The Office.
“First impressions are that it looks OK, with some genuinely funny moments [mainly] from the same jokes (about such subjects as Tic Tacs and rape alarms) as in the first episode of [the] original," it reads. "Even the names are the same, except for Bryn who has become Michael.”
Cinema Blend, meanwhile, says of what it has seen, “Factor in the adorable, charming humor glimpsed in the trailer and [there’s] high hopes that this series will live up to its potential.”
On the green light being given to a full series, Jones commented recently, “I’m absolutely thrilled about it. I’ve been following it through all the stages of the development.”
The 46-year-old actor and writer has every reason to be cheerful. A third series of her other comedy-drama series, Stella, has also been given the green light.
Jason Ritter and Alexis Bledel are playing Gavin and Stacey, respectively – roles made famous by Matthew Horne and Joanna Paige in the UK version of the show. They are joined by Ashlie Atkinson, Kurt Fuller, Kerry Kenney, Jane Kaczmarek and Dustin Ybarra.
US & Them is produced by David Rosen. Ruth Jones and James Corden – the creators and writers of Gavin & Stacey – are executive producers.
