London - Details have been emerging about the motivation behind today's grisly attack thanks to a woman who confronted one of the attackers.
According to the woman's account, the attacker cited Afghanistan as a reason for the killing of the British soldier:
I asked him if he did it and he said yes and I said why? And he said because he has killed Muslim people in Muslim countries, he said he was a British soldier and I said really and he said 'I killed him because he killed Muslims and I am fed up with people killing Muslims in Afghanistan they have nothing to do there
ITV also managed to get the second attacker on camera who also cited foreign policy as a motivation behind the attack:
I apologise that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don't care about you.
Both attackers were later shot and arrested by the police.
The Muslim Council of Britain meanwhile have been leading the calls from the Muslim community in condemnation of the attack. In their statement, they said the following:
This is a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and we condemn this unreservedly. Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We understand the victim is a serving member of the Armed Forces. Muslims have long served in this country’s Armed Forces, proudly and with honour. This attack on a member of the Armed Forces is dishonourable, and no cause justifies this murder.
Reports have already emerged of attacks against mosques being carried out in response to the machete attack.
